He Started Over Twice. This Time, He Got It Right.
Featured Story — May 2026
Matt had everything — a family, six children, a career, and what looked like the American Dream. When his marriage to his childhood best friend ended, the life he knew went with it. He fought to keep his head above water, emotionally and financially. Then two friends from childhood — Beth and Jenny — showed up just to make sure he was okay. He carries that gratitude to this day. It taught him something that would later become the foundation of everything he built: the people who choose you can change the course of your life.
He kept moving forward. He continued being a father. But when his oldest daughter went missing, the weight of it broke something open, and he found himself battling addiction for the second time in his life. This time, he lost nearly everything — his home, custody of his children. He was arrested for hugging his own daughter when she came to see him. He was sentenced to two years of probation. He experienced the stigma of addiction firsthand, with no support system in place and a justice system that wasn't built to help him heal. He says all of it — the good and the bad — is what got him to where he is today.
"I wouldn't be in recovery today if it wasn't for her coming to see her Dad."
In June 2024, while still on probation and in active recovery, Matt founded I Choose You Inc. — a nonprofit built on one belief: no one should have to walk the road to recovery alone. He started hosting a weekly Recovery Support Group in his community. He went back to school and graduated with his MBA Cum Laude. He was released from probation eight months early. Today, he is pursuing his Doctorate in Business Administration.
"I am truly living my dream life, knowing I am enough, and knowing I will always choose my children. The only thing stronger than addiction is love — the love for my children."
